Everything about red sandalwood

Red sandalwood is a valuable hardwood species belonging to the genus Maenga of the legume family.

Appearance Characteristics:

Red sandalwood trees are usually medium to large trees with a broadly rounded crown. The bark is grey-brown and longitudinally fissured, and the trunk is usually straight. The leaves are compound, with oval, glossy leaflets.

Wood properties:

Red rosewood has a hard texture, high density, abrasion and corrosion resistance, and excellent durability. It has a beautiful wood grain, deep colour, often deep red to purple-red, and a characteristic black grain, creating a unique visual effect.

Distribution:

Ruby pear is mainly distributed in South and Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and other countries.

Uses:

Because of its unique colour and grain, saffron pear wood is often used to make high-grade furniture, carvings, musical instruments and other fine crafts. Its wood is also widely used in construction and shipbuilding. The rest of the trunk of red rosewood has other functions. The wood (heartwood) in the centre of the trunk and the bark are used for medicine. People have used rosewood to treat cancer, wounds, digestive problems, fluid retention, and many other ailments, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. In manufacturing, red sandalwood is used as a flavouring agent for alcoholic beverages.
